Application
S-Enantiomer of Pregabalin. A GABA analogue used as an anticonvulsant. Anxiolytic analgesic used to treat peripheral neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia.
Pregabalin is a new type of anti-epileptic drug. Its molecular structure has a gamma aminobutyric acid structure, so it has anti-spasmodic effects. It was successfully developed by Pfizer to treat peripheral neuralgia or adjuvant treatment of partial seizures. . In December 2008, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved pregabalin for the treatment of diabetic peripheral neuralgia (DPN) and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), the two most common neuropathic pain. Neuropathic pain is one of the most difficult to treat chronic pain syndromes. It is characterized by dull pain, burning, and tingling. There are many causes of neuralgia. Diabetes, infections (such as shingles), cancer and AIDS can all trigger nerves. Pain, about 3% of people in Europe suffer from neuralgia.
