Mechanism of action : PVP is a hydrophilic polymer that has no antibacterial effect. However, due to its affinity for cell membranes, it can directly lead iodine to the cell surface of bacteria, which offers great significance for improving the antibacterial activity of iodine. The target of iodine is the bacterial cytoplasm and cytoplasmic membrane, which kills bacteria immediately in a matter of seconds. When the molecules necessary for the survival of organisms such as sulfhydryl compounds, peptides, proteins, lipids and cytosine are contacted with PVP-I, they are immediately oxidized or iodinated by iodine to lose their activity and achieve a long-term bactericidal action.
Povidone iodine is a complex of iodine with povidone. It occurs as a yellowish brown to reddish brown amorphous powder, having a slight characteristic odour. Its solution is acid to litmus. Soluble in water and in alcohol, practically insoluble in chloroform, in carbon tetrachloride, in ether, in solvent hexane, and in acetone. It is an external antiseptic with a broad microbicidal spectrum against bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, and yeasts. This gel has about 1.0% available iodine.
